Your engagement session should feel less like a photoshoot and more like a really good date night—with someone occasionally taking photos of you. If you're worried about feeling awkward, not knowing what to wear, or wondering what you're supposed to do with your hands, these tips will help you feel prepared and relaxed. Here are some tips to ensure your engagement session turns out amazing!

Choose a Location That fits your vibe

Every couple has a particular vibe, whether that whimsical tall grass, or a timeless city vibe. I have locations to recommend to all my clients. But if you have a specific location that means a lot to you, I'll be more than happy to photograph your engagement session there. When you're somewhere familiar and meaningful, it becomes much easier to relax in front of the camera.

Plan Your Outfits—But Don't Match Too Much

Coordinate rather than match.

Choose complementary colors and textures instead of showing up in identical shades. Neutrals, earthy tones, soft blues, creams, and subtle patterns tend to photograph beautifully.

A great rule is to bring two outfits: one slightly more casual and one a little more dressed up. This gives your gallery variety without making the session feel like a full-day production. I also send all my engagement session clients a session welcomer guide to help further with coordinating outfits and example photos.

Wear Something You Can Move In

Your engagement session isn't the time to discover that your new shoes give you blisters.

You'll probably walk, sit, spin, hug, and move around quite a bit, so make sure your clothes are comfortable enough to move naturally. If you're constantly adjusting your outfit, it will be much harder to relax.

Don't Worry About Knowing How to Pose

You don't need to arrive with a Pinterest board of poses memorized. You can bring one for pose inspiration and I'll do my best to ensure you get the results your'e looking for. I do come prepared with posing as well so if you're unsure about posing, don't worry about it. I got you covered :)

Instead of holding a pose for five minutes, you'll likely be asked to walk together, talk, dance, cuddle, or interact with each other.

The goal isn't to look like models. It's to look like yourselves.

Give Yourselves More Time Than You Think You Need

Don't schedule your engagement session immediately before dinner reservations, another appointment, or a packed evening.

Give yourselves enough time to arrive, change outfits, explore the location, and relax. Rushing into your session can make you feel stressed before the camera even comes out.

Think of the session as part of the date, not an appointment you need to get through.

Most Importantly: Have Fun!!!!

Your engagement photos don't need to look perfect. They should feel like you two.

Laugh too loudly. Walk barefoot. Get a little windblown. Kiss in the middle of a sentence. Let your photographer capture the little moments that happen naturally.

Years from now, you'll probably care much more about how the photos felt than whether every hair was perfectly in place.
